History of The University of New Mexico

Founded in 1889 in the heart of Albuquerque, UNM’s mission is to serve as New Mexico’s flagship institution of higher learning through growing excellence in teaching, research, patient care, and community service.

History

The University represents a cross-section of cultures and backgrounds and boasts outstanding faculty who are dedicated to student success and program completion.

UNM is the only university in New Mexico to receive a “Research University/Very High Research Activity” designation by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

College of Nursing

Founded in 1955 with 17 students, UNM’s College of Nursing celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2015 with more than 500 students and 5,000 alumni throughout the state and across the nation.

The College of Nursing’s vision is to develop solutions for the most important nursing challenges pertaining to human health and health equity in our communities through education, scholarship, practice and service.

The mission of the CON is to provide exemplary and innovative education, research, practice, service, and leadership that improves state, national, and global health. The College’s efforts focus on the scholarship of nursing education, research, practice, and policy to inform and lead in the delivery and analysis of nursing and health care.

Accreditation

The baccalaureate and master’s programs at the UNM College of Nursing are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington DC 20036, (202) 887-6791, through December 31, 2022.
